Style/ Dublin/ London streets

Standard

Here is a look that I’ve seen here on the streets of Dublin and that I think it´s really cool. the Mod style. it has an appeal to me because of its subculture British origins.

you can get this look if you  browse around through charity shops, vintage shops, but this particular shop in  the city centre  “Carousel” has  a little bit of everything for girls! jewelleries, dresses, bags and bandanas, belts, they have a unique design,  for the motifs, you wont find it nowhere else.

here are the latest on their web site, really interesting;

Mod Style Inspiration: The Mod Couple Portraits Of Carlotta Cardana.

Modern Mod Style Inspiration

At first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking that Carlotta Cardanas portraits of mod couples are straight out of 1960’s England. In fact, these photographs were only taken in the last three years! This blurring of time is part of why we adore this project. Cardana has taken so much care to place these couples in surroundings that mirror their mod style, and evoke the time and place that mod originated. The surroundings become a part of their style as much as their clothes are. Cardanas photography style – the square format of the photos, the colour palette used, the lighting, all capture a retro vibe perfectly.

Speaking of retro vibes, who can ignore the amazing vintage style inspiration that these couples are? Their dedication to mod style, and also each other, is admirable. It’s so sweet how the couples complement and reinforce each others style. Do you think you could dress like this with your partner? Could you be as committed to a style and subculture as much as these couples are?

We picked out some of our favorites photographs below, but head over to Carlottas website (here) to see the rest of the project and more of her incredible work.

Weekend

I´ve been to Galway for the weekend, yes, yes, despite of the rain and the cold! I couldn’t not avoid to compare to Dublin all the time! obvious! some parts in the city centre mainly. I think, somehow it is similar to Dublin, in some parts I had the feeling that I was in some other Dublin 22, 4, 8 with different busses and some more sighs in gaelic!
the Spanish Arc is very interesting and the Latin quartier as well, that was the highlight of the day….
must be a very nice place during the summer, although it was busy there. this is the medieval part of the city centre, I really love this kind of place, is totally different from the Temple Bar here in Dublin.
I would come back to Galway during the summer, but I think I still prefer Dublin…

Still talking about men fashion…

The Smiths: Get The Look

He might be a grumpy so-and-so now but Morrissey was an undoubtable style icon in his time with The Smiths (and the rest weren’t bad either…)

Despite the fact that they’re Joey Barton’s favourite band and, well, Morrissey is undoubtedly a bit of a mug, The Smiths were undeniably cool.
They may have hit their cool peak when that JGL fella was in love with them in (500) Days Of Summer, but – ask your Dad – they were top banana back in the days when saying stuff like ‘top banana’ was still a thing.
While the rest of the Eighties fell apart at the polyester-jacketed, shoulder-padded seams, The Smiths stayed cold as ice.
Here are a few of our favourite Smiths looks and how you can get ’em yourself (rampant romantic fatalism optional):

Look at how happy they are! Don’t think Morrissey was ever that happy again (daffodil and all) but look how cool they all look. Marr with those shades, Mozza’s blue bomber: that’s a pretty ace look, no matter what the decade.

BLEACH WASH SPRAY ON SKINNY JEANS

Never have we seen Mozza looking so cool. Although a classy denim jacket accessorised with some chinos or some bleached-denim (see above) will never not look ace.

BLUE WASHED DENIM JACKET

Hipsters on bikes, eh? Somethings just don’t change. Despite the fact that he’s wearing a t-shirt OF HIS OWN BAND (naughty Morrissey; very bad Morrissey), the look of his video has become pretty timeless: tortoise shell rims, black Harrington and a snarky take on happiness.
Something makes us thing Morrissey wasn’t the funnest person to hang about with but God, did he look cool while being grumpy.

Men fashion/ Dublin

I´ve decided to write a bit about men fashion and all the stuff that I got to know here in the old world. who works in a second hand shop like me, gets to know a lot about fashion, the stocks are always been renewed and the process of buying and selling is very wheeling. the dynamism in a  busy second hand shop let us used to a great variety of labels ( I’ve got obsessed by them) and with a huge amount of stuff being renewed. not always quantity means quality, but working in a shop like that you can´t resist having your wardrobe renewed very often without great costs, and the facility of getting traditional labels not that easy to find, even when you search for them in so many diferent places. vintage shops, Charity shops etc… Dublin is not Paris, ok, but is not all about “track suits” either ( very popular here) or football jerseys or even wearing both at the same time, terrible fashion! but yes, sometimes a glimpse of a gorgeous Italian blazer, matching with stylish pair of shoes is possible! delightfully  displaying a very elegant casual visual! fashion here, was determined for very particular circumstances, both menswear and women swear. firstly the English Occupancy, secondly the cold weather, and lastly the rural culture ( we can´t ignore that the rural past is not that far, Ireland is still defined as a rural country, not industrialized like North America or UK) from the English Occupancy; the common sense, the respect for tradition, because of the cold weather;  the high quality of the fabrics, wools and knitwears, and from the rural culture the modesty, the practicality and unpretentiousness. today men can match the “fisherman jumper”, or sweater ( USA) with a fashionable pair of jeans, creating a mix of tendencies, the old and the new, the traditional and the modern which you can only find in Dublin streets. gloves, scarfs, hats will never be out of fashion, they are just survivor kits for the hard winters. wearing in a fashionable manner they are high estimate bits, some of them are truly work of art with a lovely label in the end. “Made in Republic of Ireland” they are exposed during the whole year in the high fashionable and traditional shops like Carraig Donn, Donegal Shop, Aran Crafts Knitwear, House of Ireland,  the destiny if you want quality and tradition. yes variety is huge, there are even ponchos or more unusual pieces but the most popular ones are Cardigans, jumpers and coats. the north American market is the most welcoming for  traditional Irish clothing, we could even say, somehow,  traditional Irish clothing is more an “American” thing than an Irish thing, because of the American/Irish community there. it´s obvious when we see some shops using the word sweater instead of jumper. coats are fashion items that seduces who loves fashion, as a native of a hot weather culture, I know that coats for us are really formal, makes you look like ten thousand older and fatter than you are depending that way you manage to wear then. besides they are expensive, so you almost never wear then. but in Dublin is totally different. coats are not a formal thing to wear, the tendencies is to wear then with some unpretentiousness, like if its not a big deal, its a day by day item, so it´s really charming! men here prefer wearing them in dark colours with the collar high, that’s gives them a kind of rustic blasé look.  so the basic for the Nordic men is a shirt, under it a jumper/sweater made of wool, a blazer over it and to finish an overcoat. they don´t seem really into belted coats, like the trench coats. Image basic dark overcoat  for men here Imageovercoat, collar high, blasé rustic look

to be elegant it doesn’t matter the culture or the weather, in my opinion it´s easier to be elegant in a cold weather, but elegance depends of the common sense as well. contrasts are always informative and interesting, there are a lot to talk about men fashion, next post ill be talking about accessories, gloves, hats and the last tendencies mainly in Ireland and UK.

the place I´ve learned to call home sweet home!

I`m a history student, so I´m really fond of old pictures! typical! I´ve just found this link to Dun Laoghaire showing lots of old pics and some history of the  past of this part of Dublin that sometimes we don´t really know how to explain how is it not Dublin but it is at the same time! what a dilemma if you live in Dun Laoghaire for a long time!

that´s so cool, I think everything is there! everything I want to talk about and more, in a different way, like if I was talking to a friend over the phone, or actually e- mailing someone. I created this blog, because I want to talk about my years in this city, things I´ve learned, things I´ve seeing, doing, discovering, buying, eating, drinking, is more like for myself to remember it. someday…
